Sweet Home Alabama has always been a personal favorite of mine. Reese Witherspoon is one of my favorite actors and I think she was absolutely perfect for the part of Melanie. I love the story line of a young girl who leaves her small redneck home town. Melanie left a complicated past behind her once she decided to leave Pigeon Creek, Alabama. In high school, she dated the quarterback who led his team to a state championship. Melanie married Jake once she became a pregnant teenager. She had a miscarriage and left town shortly after. She established herself and became a successful New York Fashion designer. She was very proud of the life accomplishments she made; rarely if ever missing home. Once she became engaged to the mayor's son, she had to return home to try to convince Jake to finally give her a divorce. Jake refused to sign the divorce papers and mailed them back multiple times. One night at the local pub in Alabama after a few failed attempts to get Jake to sign the papers, Melanie upset the locals by revealing everyone's skeletons after having too much to drink. Jake becomes angry with her and takes her home. When she wakes up the next morning, the divorce papers are laying on her bed signed by Jake. Once the papers were finally signed, Melanie discovers that Jake had once gone to NYC to try to find her. That night, she goes to the cemetery to tell her old coon dog Bear good bye. Jake shows up and explains how he told the dog that her disappearance was his fault and they end up talking about why the marriage did not work, the baby they lost, and why she left. Jake gives a blessing for Melanie to have a good life and to move on. A wedding is planned, but she is interrupted on her way down the isle when her lawyer shows her she forgot to sign her name on the divorce papers, which means, her and Jake are still “hitched”. Mel then decides to leave Andrew and go friend Jake. She found him on the same beach, years ago, when ten-year-old Jake had told her that he wanted to marry her "so I can kiss you anytime I want." When Mel informs Jake they are still married and she wants to stay with him, he responds with my favorite quote, ““What is it with you Southern girls? You can't make the right decisions until you've tried all the wrong ones.” After some bickering, they reunite with the famous, “So I can kiss you anytime I want” quote then celebrate with their friends and family.
This movie is an example of how things in life come full circle. Melanie taught us that even if you make mistakes at a young age, you can still do something with your life. You can go away, establish yourself and return home; if you want to. You can have roots and wings.
L. A. Ferro stole all my attention with her book Fade Into You. This is my second book I have read by this author and I was enthralled by the adventure she took her main character Mackenzie on. This book is full of suspense. There were a lot of characters who interacted with each other in many different ways. Each of them with their own skeletons, it was almost difficult to keep track. I thought I was going to have to make a character map. Over all, the way Ferro tied it all together was fascinating. The main characters Mackenzie and Connor did not choose each other, though really they did at the very beginning of the book, they didn’t have a choice in how their relationship began. Forced into an arranged marriage, to protect people who meant the world to them, the characters were determined to have an expiration date on their marriage. The walls they put up, slowly (very slowly) began to crumble as they fell in love. Both of them had secrets and needed answers. This book shows you how...
